Many have seen a computer but very few know what it is. A computer is a device that can be programmed to carry out various operations automatically, operations on arithmetic or logical nature. Modern computers are built with programs which enable them to follow generalized sets of operations. These programs enable computers to perform a wide range of tasks. A computer is made up of a system which includes the hardware, the operating system (software), and peripheral equipment required and used for full operation. A computer system consists of a processing unit called the Central Processing Unit or the CPU and a form of memory. This term may also be used for a group of computers that are connected and work together, in particular, a computer network or cluster.
It is commonly argued that the first computer was the abacus or its descendant, the slide rule, invented by William Oughtred in 1622. But the first computer which was invented in the present model was the Analytical Engine, a device conceived and designed by British mathematician Charles Babbage between 1833 and 1871.
Computers are used as management systems for a large form of industrial and client devices. The web is run on computers and it connects many several alternative computers and their users.
